Troops Detain 11 Suspected Terrorists in Iraq

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14, 2008 - Coalition forces in Iraq detained 11 suspected terrorists today and yesterday as they continued operations to expel al-Qaida in Iraq from the country, military officials reported.

Troops detained four suspects during an operation in the Tamim province near Kirkuk today in an effort to dismantle terrorist networks there, officials said. The suspects include a man wanted for his association with a terrorist leader killed in a previous operation.

Security Responsibility Returns to Iraqis in Wasit Province

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2008 – Complete security and governance responsibilities transferred to Iraqi officials in Wasit province today, giving Iraq's government responsibility for more than two-thirds of the country, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters during a news conference today.

"The national and local government now has responsibility for security and governance in all of southern Iraq," Morrell said. "It is our hope that Iraqis can take charge of security for the final five provinces in the coming months."

Coalition Forces Detain Suspects in Mosul, Baghdad

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2, 2008 - Coalition forces in Iraq captured seven terrorism suspects, including two wanted men, in operations today, military officials reported.

Coalition forces, acting on tips from individuals already in custody, captured a wanted man and two additional suspects in Mosul. The wanted man is believed to be developing technology to impede coalition forces' ability to detect car bombs and other improvised explosive devices, officials said. Intelligence reports also suggest that the man is using his business as a cover for al-Qaida money-laundering activities.

20 militants, 5 guards die in Afghanistan clashes

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Taliban militants attacked a logistics convoy in western Afghanistan on Friday, sparking a clash that killed 10 insurgents and five Afghan guards, an official said. Another 10 militants were killed by U.S.-led coalition troops north of Kabul.

The militants attacked the convoy in the western Farah province, said Farah's Gov. Roohulla Amin. In the ensuing gunfight with the guards protecting the trucks, 10 militants and five Afghan private security guards were killed, Amin said.

Coalition Captures Senior Terrorism Suspects in Iraq

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5, 2008 - Coalition troops captured more than a dozen suspected terrorists in Iraq today and yesterday, including at least three high-level al-Qaida in Iraq leaders, military officials said.

Of 14 people detained today, one is believed to a senior advisor of al-Qaida in Iraq operations in northern Mosul. Intelligence reports indicate he oversees all attacks there and provides advice for targeting, officials said.

Soldiers Deliver School Supplies to Afghan Villages

Coalition Forces in Iraq Detain Nine Suspects, Find IED

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28, 2008 - Coalition forces in Iraq detained nine suspected terrorists, including two alleged al-Qaida in Iraq leaders, and found an improvised explosive device during operations in Baghdad and the Hamrin Mountains region of Diyala province today, military officials reported.

A suspected terrorist leader who reportedly just returned to Iraq after trying to escape arrest during a trip to Syria was captured in Baghdad. The man is believed to be a regional al-Qaida in Iraq leader who orchestrates assassinations of Iraqis and allegedly moves foreign terrorists into Iraq to conduct attacks, officials said.

Rejuvenated Iraqi National Police Now 'Force of Choice' General Says

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28, 2008 - The Iraqi National Police once owned an unenviable reputation for unreliability, but that has all changed, a senior U.S. military officer posted in Iraq said today.

"The National Police, a force that had an unacceptable reputation and performance less than 15 months ago, is now the Iraq police force of choice," Army Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick told reporters at a Baghdad news conference. Helmick commands Multinational Security Transition Command Iraq, which, through its NATO component, trains Iraqi police and soldiers.

US coalition: 100 militants killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - A four-day battle that began with an ambush on a joint U.S-Afghan patrol in southern Afghanistan has killed more than 100 militants, the coalition said Thursday.

Militants wielding rocket-propelled grenades, guns and mortars attacked the joint patrol in the southern province of Helmand multiple times starting Monday, the coalition said. The combined force called in fighter aircraft for support.
