WASHINGTON, Feb. 27, 2008 - Iraqi and coalition forces throughout Iraq have killed and captured several terrorists over the past several days.
In operations around Iraq today North of Tarmiyah, coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists, including an alleged al Qaeda leader. That suspect is reportedly directly associated with al Qaeda's northern belt senior leader, and he obtains funds by selling vehicles. The network is responsible for the majority of bombings in the area and is involved in extortion, intimidation, weapons trafficking and facilitating foreign terrorists.

Troops Provide Water Heaters to Afghan Hospital, Visit Police

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, Feb. 21, 2008 - Afghan National Army soldiers assisted by coalition forces delivered five water heaters to the Tarin Kowt hospital and visited the Oruzgan provincial headquarters of the Afghan National Police last week.
The team followed up Feb. 16 on a previous visit that included a meeting with the hospital director to discuss needs. The ANA 201st Kandak commander presented the water heaters and expressed his commitment to improving conditions at the hospital.

Longest Road Project in Iraq Marks Security Success

BAGHDAD, Feb. 19, 2008 - Uranium Road, which runs from Hit to Asad, is getting a $29.6 million makeover in the longest road project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Iraq.
The mission-essential 51-kilometer alternate supply route, now more than 60 percent finished and targeted for completion in early April, is Phase 1 of a planned two-stage project.

In Sharqat, coalition forces targeted the alleged founder of an insurgent group tied to the leader of the al Qaeda in Iraq network in Beiji. As coalition forces called for the occupants of a target building to come out, one man ran out of the building and was directed to stop. He continued toward the ground force's position despite continued commands to stop and was killed. Two suspected terrorists were detained during the operation.

North of Mahmudiya, coalition forces captured an alleged leader involved in the al Qaeda in Iraq network in Baghdad's southern belt. That network is stunned after recent successes achieved against its leadership, to include the detention of a key facilitator and the network's deputy leader, officials said. Three more al Qaeda leaders were killed during a recent air strike. Six more suspected terrorists were captured during the operation, which also yielded protective gear, weapons and three military-style assault vests.

An intelligence specialist with Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, Boutwell is planning for an upcoming deployment to Iraq after recovering from severe injuries suffered during an attack in Iraq's Anbar province on March 14, 2004.

Bush Delivers $515.4 Billion Defense Budget Request to Congress

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4, 2008 - A 3.4 percent military pay raise, a 2.9 percent civilian raise, money to continue to grow the Army and Marines and a funding increase to maintain readiness are major aspects of the fiscal 2009 defense budget request President Bush sent to Congress today.
The defense budget request is for $515.4 billion - a $35.9 billion increase over the 2008 level. The total federal budget request for fiscal 2009 is $3.1 trillion.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4, 2008 - Coalition forces are making significant progress securing the former insurgent badlands of eastern Baghdad province, a commander in the region said today.
Before the surge, fewer than 100 U.S. troops patrolled the area known as the Madain qadha, leaving an area about the size of the Capital Beltway ripe for insurgent activities that made their way into Baghdad.

Coalition Troops in Iraq Capture 10 Suspects, Find Cache

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4, 2008 - Coalition forces in Iraq today captured 10 suspected terrorists and found a weapons cache during several anti-insurgent operations conducted across the country, military officials said.
In Tarmiyah, coalition forces captured an alleged associate of the al Qaeda in Iraq senior leader for the network north of Baghdad. Reports indicate the detainee and his son were subordinates to the terrorist senior leader. The suspect allegedly left his position within the network, but remained actively engaged in attacks against coalition forces. Three other suspected terrorists also were detained. The operation also yielded an enemy weapons cache that contained military-style assault vests, ammunition, and propane tanks.

BAYRK, Iraq, Feb. 4, 2008 - Making a positive impact, no matter how little, on the lives of Iraqis is a big part of current operations by coalition forces in the Fahama region.
Soldiers with the 4th Infantry Division's 1st Platoon, Company D, 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, serving with Multinational Division Baghdad and attached to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-68th AR, made this type of impact by bringing presents to school children Feb. 2 in this rural village.
